Nikolaj Andrejevič Rimskij-Korsakov
Schedule of performances
The fairy-tale opera by the Russian Romantic composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov is a musical narrative of the tale of the musician Sadko. He wishes to convince the others to escape isolation, the enclosed home setting and to discover new worlds. His dream, however, is met with rejection and distrust. Only the beautiful Volhovna, daughter of the sovereign of the see, captivated by his music helps him to materialise his visionary ideas. Korsakov was inspired by the Russian mediaeval epical poems Byliny and eposes about the lead character – adventurer, merchant and singer. Korsakov has brought them together with different legends about seas, balancing between the world of human and that of sea creatures, and between myth and reality. Sadko is a Slavic interpretation of Orpheus and Odysseus. He embodies the creative power of fantasy that struggles with reality. The production of the Korsakov masterpiece is a collaborative work by the SND Opera and the Flemmish Opera in Antwerp and Gent. The event will also mark the Bratislava debut of the outstanding US director Daniel Kramer.
The production is not suitable for children and youth under the age of 17.
