1946, Kunvadas: a fictitious Hungarian village by the city of Szolnok. World War 2 has just ended and a handful of deported Jews are returning home. Lieutenant Sándor, village teacher, is accused of war crimes and is affected by political struggles. Meanwhile, the atmosphere of lynching escalates. Poverty and hunger trigger hysteria and village folk keep looking for an enemy: groups are formed ready to take justice into their own hands. History is quick to repeat itself.

Pál Závada´s his latest novel A Day at the Market Place is based on true events and draws from authentic documents. The novel is one of the principal literary pieces in recent years. Závada, the laureate of the Kossuth Prize, was inspired by the pogrom against Jews, Kunmadaras – utterly shocking, brutal series of events that remain unknown to Hungarian historians. The author explores the motivation behind the incident, and presents major human story of our historical traumas and responsibility for community. The novel was nominated for the 2017 Libri award. The Mohács brothers adapted the piece to stage play.
