The last but one Mozart’s opera was commissioned on the occasion of the coronation of Leopold II in Prague in 1791. The commissioner – the Bohemian estates, wanted to ingratiate themselves with the new Habsburg Emperor, as he should recognize himself in the opera mirror in the character of idealized Roman Emperor Tito Vespasian. But Mozart created a work going far beyond the political order, the work full of passion and emotions, on machination, love, revenge, and forgiveness, too. Today, we may read this story with different political comments, or even hesitating about the traditional interpretations we may explore the reasons of often resignation of the clever emperor in his relations to women.
