Mr Punch (from the Italian Pulcinello) and his wife Judy are two very popular puppet figures in England comparable with the Slovak Gašparko and his puppet theatre. A typical method is to demonstrate through a single puppeteer several short sequences, mainly conflicts of a thick and naive character. Violence often appears in the play. Even the premiere of Birtwistle’s opera Punch and Judy in 1968 evoked conflicting views on the theme of scenes of violence. Even today, this work has the potential to polarize reactions. Harrison Birtwistle and librettist Stephen Pruslin have created stylised tragedy full of grotesque moments in which music can convincingly show the same dark, infernal images as it can love. Meanwhile a strange, distracted world full of fairground illusions and crazy situations opens up in front of us.
