Opera in three acts performed in Italian

The new SND building, Opera and Ballet hall

Rigoletto, one of the best known pieces by the great Italian composer does not require any extensive introduction. The drama The King Amuses Himself by Victor Hugo served Verdi as a basis for the portrayal of great passions, societal criticism and tender fatherly love. The lead character, the court clown alias servant Rigoletto, faces a dilemma: either to survive within the immoral setting at all cost and without financial implications, disregarding the consequences of one’s own servitude, or to put up a resistance as did Count Monterone. For every deed has it cost, sometimes quite substantial, of a loss of – as in this case – the beloved daughter Gilda.
