Dvořák’s Rusalka is far from merely a romantic fairy-tale. Quite on the contrary: it unveils plenty of prima facie inconspicuous symbolic and psychological implications. It depicts the fight between honesty and hypocrisy and betrayal, as well as the eternal struggle between light and darkness, or the dream of eternity and the reality of mortality. The lead character may be a water fairy, yet her heart is filled with deep human emotions – longing and love. She is forever alone – having to make her own decisions and to face their tragic consequences. Dvořák’s opera is full of radiant music beauty.
