The phenomenal work of Piotr I. Tchaikovsky, Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov’s Swan Lake is undoubtedly the most famous ballet title. The current production has dominated the repertoire of the Slovak National Theatre Ballet for thirty years. Although the ballet’s world première in Moscow in 1877 did not meet with a positive reaction, its 1895 production in St Petersburg by the choreographic tandem of Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov established it as one of the masterpieces of classical ballet literature. Since then, the romantic story of Prince Siegfried and Princess Odette bewitched into the form of a swan has been a staple and sought-after title for the major dance companies. The current production by Rafael Avnikian is based on the classic St Petersburg version by Konstantin Sergeyev.
