Ruggiero Leoncavallo and Pietro Mascagni were inspired by wild passions of the southern Italy. Their intention was to present a genuine and authentic Italian temperament with no idealization. To present it fully in compliance with the spirit of then new artistic style – the Verism, which they both represented and the highest priority of which was the artistic truth. In their one-act-works they narrate authentic stories from towns in Calabria and Sicily. In both of them we meet uncontrollable passionate love, but traditional bloody vendetta as well.
