Theatre is a peculiar organism. To an outsider, it resembles a workshop of an alchemist. All kinds of people combine the most improbable ingredients there in the hope of creating something rare. A production that would allow actors and audiences to experience that exceptional feeling of having been here and now, witnessing – and helping to create – a unique artistic event.
The creators of Night Rehearsal decided to take audiences backstage. Indeed, they are not the first ones. Perhaps the most famous literary glimpse into what precedes a theatrical première is How a Play is Produced by Karel Čapek. (“A première is what happens when, in desperation, one finally decides to let the whole thing run by itself, whatever may come.”)
At the same time, Night Rehearsal also wishes to pay tribute to those on whom theatre depends – actors, singers and dancers. In the words of Rainer Lewandowski: “After all, actors are the very foundation of theatre. Night after night, they come before you and risk everything. Night after night, a new challenge, a new test. And yet they never have any certainty. That is the cruelty of this profession. And its beauty as well.“ (In: Tonight Neither Hamlet).
The professional life of a dancer is immensely demanding. It is built on physical hardship and constrained by age. And like any other performer, a dancer depends on who “invites them to dance” – whether they are given work that enables them to reveal their true potential. Whether the peak of their dancing career comes at a time when a particular theatre is able to make use of them. So Night Rehearsal is perhaps above all a tribute to dancers. With a smile, it highlights the difficulties they sometimes face, while letting their art and beauty speak for themselves.
The production contains smoke effects and strong language.
The production is suitable for viewers aged 15 and older.
