The Bartered Bride

Opera

Comic opera in three acts performed in Czech

Czech and English subtitles

The new SND building, Opera and Ballet hall
The popular opera by the Czech classic Bedřich Smetana is certainly not an idyllic picture of the Czech countryside but an extremely original and unbiased look at rooted national stereotypes - sometimes ironic, harsh and sometimes kind. However, the main feature of The Bartered Bride is its brilliant humour. Mařenka was promised by her parents to be married to a rich peasant, Mích. Mařenka, however, loves Jeník, a poor young man who wins his chosen one by a clever ploy of seemingly selling his bride.

The masterpiece of Czech opera literature returns to the stage of the SND Opera in a playful and witty direction by Pavel Mikuláštík, which underlines the intentions of the composer and librettist Karel Sabina.

This production is presented on the occasion of the Year of Czech Music and the 200th anniversary of Bedřich Smetana's birth.
