The première of I LOVE MAMA opened the 75th anniversary season of DJGT with the theme "Legends". Although there are many legends in art, MAMA is perhaps the unwritten legend of every person.
This comedy play featuring women was written by contemporary Israeli playwright HADAR GALRON, who also directed the production. Thanks to this, we got to know for the first time in Slovakia the directorial style of a world-renowned playwright, director, actress, stand-up comedian and a recognised theatre personality working in various multi-cultural environments. Feminine themes, the search for tolerance and humour as a box of last resort are among her typical traits as an author. In addition to I LOVE MAMA, she portrayed women, for example, in the drama MIKVE, also known in our theatre environment.
The production I LOVE MAMA brings to the stage nine women and three generations of one big family—from a kind grandmother to daughters with different personalities, a new bride, and granddaughters looking for their place in the modern age. Humorous situations and witty dialogues capture the more serious aspects of motherhood with insight: how to combine motherhood with a career, how to maintain a marriage alongside motherhood, how to have a child without a man, how to cope with an unexpected pregnancy, how to deal with postpartum depression, how to face an orthodox mother, how to find oneself, what love tastes like.
The production is accompanied with music composed by internationally renowned musician Itamar Gross, and one actor portrays male characters. Jozef Ciller, Eva Kleinová, Mária Danadová and other prominent names of the Slovak theatre scene participated in this unique production. In the role of the grandmother and the family's grandmother, the guest actress of the Slovak National Theatre Božidara Turzonova alternates with Jana Pilzová.
This comedic, serious and heartwarming portrayal of the three generations of women is a refreshing title in the repertoire for audiences of all ages.
