Juraj Fábry

Juraj Fábry has long been one of the most influential Slovak stage designers. He initially studied at the School of Applied Arts in Kremnica and Bratislava. From 1976 to 1981, he attended Prof. Ladislav Vychodil's class at the Department of Scenography and Costume Design at the Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava, where he graduated in scenography. He accepted his first engagement at the SNP Theatre in Martin. After his commitment, he moved to Belgrade, where he lived until 1993. Since then, he has lived alternately in Slovakia and Serbia. Juraj Fábry has freelanced for almost his entire career in Slovakia, the former Yugoslavia, Hungary and elsewhere. He designed over two hundred stage productions and several films. Since 2008, he has taught at the Department of Scenography of the Academy of Performing Arts. His profile drama and ballet creations include A. N. Ostrovsky's The Forest (SNP Martin Theatre), O. Šoth's The Marriage of Figaro (Košice Theatre), H. Firstein's The Birdcage (NS Bratislava), J. Fištejn, O. Soukup, G. Osvaldová The Elixir of Life (Ta Fantastika Praha), CH. Hampton Ashes and Passion (Drama Theatre of the Slovak National Theatre), J. Srbljanovic Barbelo (DJP Belgrade), B. Pipovic The Paris Commune (Atelier 212 Belgrade), M. Carr The Cat Swamp (National Theatre Budapest), R. Vitrac Victor, Children in Government (Új színház Budapest), A. P. Chekhov Three Sisters (Gárdonyi Theatre G. Eger), P. Shaffer Amadeus (Csíky Theatre G. Kaposvár) as well as opera productions by G. Verdi's Attila (State Opera Bystrica), G. Verdi Ernani (State Opera Bystrica), G. Verdi Il Trovatore (Opera SND) and others. He collaborated with directors R. Polák, Ľ. Vajdiček, J. Bednárik, B. Krišek, D. Mijač, R. Milenkovič, M. Bendik and others. His unique creative style is characterised by the variability and mobility of spatial solutions and the combination of authentic spaces and artefacts with the artistic, almost surreal stylisation of "unreal" spaces.
