After first training to be a horn player, tenor Michael Müller-Kasztelan got his his Bachelor’s Degree in German studies and music education. In parallel, he studied opera and concert-singing at the Saar Conservatory of Music. Afterwards he completed his studies at the prestigious Eastman School of Music, New York, USA. His teachers include Brigitte Fassbaender, Margreet Honic and Albert Dohmen.
While still a student, he was engaged by the Theater Saarbrücken, was Visiting Artist at MIT Boston, and performed at the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, which led to further engagements in major roles at the Concert Halls of Shenzen and Beijing, Sala Nezahualcoyol México City, Sala Villanueva de Toluca, the Munich Biennale, the Zwingenberg Opera Festival, the theaters of Oldenburg, Lübeck, Koblenz, Bremerhaven, Rostock, Neustreliz, the Merzig Tent Opera, and the Kiel Opera House, where he has been a permanent ensemble member since the 2009/10 season.
As a performer of contemporary music, he has appeared in the main tenor parts for the premieres of Cristóbal Halffter’s Schachnovelle, Volker David Kirchner’s Savonarola, and Marco Tutino’s Falscher Verrat. He has worked with directors like Christopher Alden, John Dew, Philipp Himmelmann, Daniel Karasek, Christian Pöppelreiter and Jay Scheib, as well as Brigitte Fassbaender, Sandra Leupold, and Andrea Moses.
Parallel to his operatic career, Michael Kasztelan also pursues an active career as a concert and Lied-singer on stages and in recital halls worldwide.
