Simona Vachálková

Costume and stage designer
 
In 1983 - 1987 she studied at the School of Applied Arts in Bratislava, lace and textile design under prof. J. Berger, J. Saboová, K. Pichler.
In 1987 - 1993 she studied at the Academy of Performing Arts under prof. L. Purkyňová, prof. M. Čorba and prof. J. Ciller.
 
As a student, she began working professionally in Slovak theatres, with her debut in the production No Exit, directed by V. Strnisko, in 1992 at the Slovak National Theatre.
She has participated in the creation of hundreds of costumes for many productions in Slovak theatres - Bratislava, Trnava, Nitra, Banská Bystrica, and Košice.
In addition, she works intensively with many venues not only in Bratislava but also in the Czech Republic, in Brno, Ostrava and Prague, for example, with the Drama Club.
She has worked with renowned theatre directors such as V. Strnisko, R. Polák, V. Klimáček, E. Horváth Jr., J. Nôta, S. Ferancová, I. Holub, K. Vosátko, J. Luterán, S. Daubnerová, J. Ďurovčík, M. Chudovský, M. Poláková and others.
She has participated in successful theatre productions at the Drama Theatre of the Slovak National Theatre, such as No Exit, Fernando Krapp Wrote Me This Letter, Maria Stuarda, Rosmersholm directed by V. Strnisko, Ashes and Aquavit, The Last Cigar directed by E. Horváth Jr., The King Has Fun, With Mama directed by R. Polák, The Singing House directed by S. Daubner, The Secret of Santa Vittoria directed by A. Weisel Lelk and others.
 
She also worked intensively at the Astorka Korzo Theatre, where she created costume designs for the performances Ujo Vána, The Summer Guests, The Exchange, The Petty Bourgeois, The Centaurs directed by R. Polák, The Birthday, The Labor of Life directed by V. Strnisko or Silvia directed by S. Ferancová.
 
Another theatre venue where she has been involved in performances is the GUnaGU theatre, with dozens of costumes for plays such as The Nostalgic Java, The Lady with the Hummingbird, The White Men, Calligari, Love, Cirostratus, Lonely, Bar Argentina, Men Are Gone, Love and Turpentine, Summer 1968, Directors of the Globe, I Cook and I Believe, Silent Night and others.
She collaborates with Theatre Without Masks, where she created costumes for the play Maids directed by S. Ferancová or False Note directed by M. Zachenská.
 
She also collaborates with the New Stage Theatre, where her work is linked to productions such as A lie of the mind directed by E. Horváth Jr., The Big Ear, Edith and Marlen directed by I. Holub, Agent Krowiak Intervenes, Fountain for Zuzana directed by K. Vosátka, The Marriage of Figaro directed by I. Rajmont, Iago directed by R. Johanson.
 
Her work is also represented by her work at the Slovak National Theatre Ballet, where she created costume designs for the ballets Popolvar directed by J. Ďurovčík, Carmen à la Gypsy Devils directed by L. Cmorej, From Fairy Tale to Fairy Tale directed by J. Dolinský Sr. and also in the Košice ballet Hamlet directed by O. Šoth.
She often collaborates with choreographer M. Poláková, with whom she has created several productions of modern dance.
 
Her costume designs for opera are represented at the Janáček Opera in Brno, namely The Fate directed by A. Haag, in the Ostrava opera Carmen directed by M. Chudovský, in the Opera of the National Theatre in Prague The Excursions of Mr. Brouček directed by S. Daubnerová, in the Opera of the National Theatre in Košice Tannhäuser directed by R. Kern Tóth, O. Šoth or Macbeth directed by A. Korenči and Krútňava directed by Vera Nemirová.
 
Her work is also equally present in her collaborations with television and film directors J. Nôta, J. Rihák, P. Krištúfek, J. Chlumský, L. Dittrich, P. Mikulík, M. Luther.
She has also participated as a costume designer, in films and video films such as Advent, The Exiles, Sad Waltz, Heaven Above Pressburg, Small Town Pictures, Broken Promise, The Visible World, The Sleeping Bill, Criminal 5 C, The Happiest of the Three, Project Alpha, Hostage, and in the fairy tales Johanka's Secret and Kovlad's Gift. She has also collaborated on television series, such as Hot Blood for Markiza TV.
 
She also participated in several editions of the Opera Ball, where she designed the decoration of the entrance to the opera with living statues, costumes for the opening choreography of the ball dancers, as well as the main costumes for the ball presenters.
 
She has participated in several editions of OTO gala evenings, designing costumes and collaborating with directors J. Minařík and K. Ďurovičová.
She has also worked on dozens of commercials with directors such as G. Marojevič, J. Johanides, F. A. Brabec, J. Hanych, V. Struhár, J. Steindler and Mr. and Mrs. Reimann.
Since 2017, she has been a lecturer at the Department of Scenography at the Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava, where she teaches theatre and film costume and costume realisation in the Scenography Department.
In 2010, she was nominated for the Sun in the Net Award for her costume design for the film Broken Promise, directed by J. Chlumský.
 
She lives and works in Bratislava.
