Alexander McCargar

Alexander is a scenographer and art historian originally from Boston, Massachusetts and now based in Vienna, Austria. Alongside designing for stages in the US and Europe, he is currently writing a PhD at the University of Vienna. In 2020 he earned his MFA in Stage Design from Yale School of Drama and previously received degrees in Architecture and Fine Arts with a minor in Art History from Rhode Island School of Design. As an art historian, Alexander researches the history of performance culture and theater design. In 2020, he was selected for a Beinecke Library Graduate Research Fellowship for work on depictions of non-European characters in European opera of the 17-18th centuries. He was a 2015-16 Fulbright Grant recipient with a project that focused on opera as a cross-disciplinary and cross-cultural art form. Alexander is a regular collaborator with the Theatermuseum Wien and his recent article about drawings in their collection was awarded the Ricciardi Prize and published by Master Drawings in 2022. Upcoming projects include associate design work for Circé (1694) with the Boston Early Music Festival.
