Dušan Jamrich was born in Bratislava. He completed his acting studies at the Academy of Performing Arts in 1970. Already during his studies, he played several characters on the stage of the SND Drama Theatre, captivating the audience so strongly that he was engaged to the company immediately after his graduation. He has played several diverse characters in classical and modern productions and plays by local and international authors. His cultivated stage speech is characterised by detachment, insight, great inner concentration, and suggestive expression. Dušan Jamrich also took many opportunities in television productions and films, the most memorable of which was his Ľudovít Štúr in the multi-part television film Štúrovci [Štúr's Followers]. He was the director of the Slovak National Theatre for the first time in 1991-1996, and served as the General Director in 1999-2005. He also worked as an associate professor at the Academy of Performing Arts and brought up a whole generation of actors who work in practically all theatres in Slovakia today. He left teaching after taking up the post of director at the Slovak National Theatre. In 2002, Dušan Jamrich was elected vice-president of the important international organisation ETC (European Theatre Convention), which unites theatres from 25 European countries (the SND Drama Theatre has been a member of the ETC since 2000). His acting is characterised not only by his dramatic imagination but also by his extremely refined physical and vocal expression. He is one of the leading reciters and experts of Hviezdoslav's poetry. He has worked with radio and television. He was vice-president and later vice-president of the Confederation of Trade Unions of the Slovak Republic.

1988 – Meritorious Artist
2003 – Order of Ľudovít Štúr I. class from the President of the Slovak Republic for outstanding merits in the development of Slovak theatre
2008 – Jozef Kroner Award for the most outstanding performance by an actor for his portrayal of Triboulet in the production of Victor Hugo's play The King Amuses Himself, with consideration for his portrayal of Lars in the production of Moira Buffini's play Dinner
2010 – The Award of the Minister of Culture of the Slovak Republic for lifetime contribution in the field of acting, with regard to the exceptional artistic performance of Homer's Iliad in the radio project of the Slovak Radio - PARNAS
2010 – Literary Fund Award for Lifetime Achievement
2019 – Literary Fund Award
