In a famous habanera, Carmen declares that every man she loves should beware. But even she is not prepared for what happens when she decides to seduce Don José, a young soldier who initially ignores her. Soon, however, he falls passionately in love with Carmen, leaves his sweetheart Micaela and his job in the army, and joins her and her smuggler friends. However, Carmen quickly gets fed up with his love. When the dashing toreador Escamillo pursues her, Don José's jealousy escalates into violence.
A compelling story about the power of human passion is seasoned with lively and touching melodies and captivating rhythms. However, the new production by director Lubor Cukr has more to offer than just a story of a fickle love; Carmen became a symbol of freedom. Love as both fate and misfortune: direct, cynical, innocent, cruel and, for that very same reason, free.
